In the morning, the bats come. At night, they fly back. In between, people enter and leave the striking, modernistic civic buildings built in Abidjan in the ‘60s and ‘70s, when the city was the capital of Ivory Coast. These extraordinary buildings, a reminder of dreams about prosperity, serve as a colorful backdrop for what’s left.

Laurence Bonvin is a Swiss documentary photographer and filmmaker. Her documentary practice has recently been centred on urban transformations, segregation, human displacements and architecture of power. She extensively exhibited her work internationally and published four monographs.
She currently lives between Berlin and Switzerland where she teaches photography at Ecal (Art and Design University) in Lausanne.
