Almost everything here is fluorescent, glittery, disposable, and plays music. Almost. For between the thousands of stalls in Yiwu, China’s “Commodity City”, people also live. They operate the largest wholesale consumer market in the world, and their expressions give away their boredom in the shadow of this endless abundance.

Jessica Kingdon is a Brooklyn-based filmmaker. Her documentary Commodity City shot in Yiwu, China was selected for the Points North Shortform Editing Residency and is playing the festival circuit. She is working on a counterpart documentary about the effects of Chinese tourists vacationing on an island in Micronesia.
