In the late 1970s, American author James Baldwin began writing his history of America as told through the life stories of three of his murdered friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King. Baldwin always knew he would one day undertake this project to trace the fraught relationship between American whites and blacks, but only managed to complete about 30 pages before his death. Utilizing Baldwin’s unique insights, his poetic prose (as wonderfully read by Samuel L. Jackson), rare archival footage and contemporary materials, this film continues his ambitious project, examining the role of violence and oppression in America, then and now, as seen through Baldwin’s sharp critical gaze.
