The superhero Mattress Mick was created while Ireland was in financial crisis. The deep recession threatened to bankrupt Michael Flynn’s mattress business, but he fought back and, with his friend (and part-time employee) Paul Kelly, created the colorful, bizarre character that turned him into a local celebrity. The Mattress Mick videos, where he battles aliens, dances with monkeys and goes back to the future have become viral sensations; And yet, plagued by debt, Michael and Paul are forced to pay a heavy price in order to keep the company afloat. When their dream of becoming “The McDonald’s of mattresses” looks like it might come true, their relationship becomes fraught and complicated.
