Spain 2017, 88 min, Spanish, Hebrew & English subtitles
Julieta was convinced that all she needed to be happy in life was lots of kids, a monkey and a castle. All of her wishes had come true, but life’s other ingredients began to seep into her unlikely fairy tale, and her family—that of the film’s director—found themselves facing multiple challenges, the main one being Spain’s economic crisis.
As the family’s matriarch, the ever-theatrical Julieta runs the tribe and manages its assets (and sometimes, it seems, the whole country) with a firm hand. Over long years of filming, she reveals bizarre secrets, touching confessions, a chaotic life philosophy, and lots of love, humor and a self-deprecating wit. She also turns the film into a colorful oddball drama that keeps viewers on their toes.
