Sweden 2017, 81 min, Kurdish, Hebrew & English subtitles
“If I fail, I’ll only die, but if I succeed, I can save hundreds of innocent people”. This was the motto of Colonel Fakhir Berwari, who single-handedly disarmed and removed thousands of mines and explosive charges in Iraq, armed with little more than a keen sense of smell, a knife and a shovel. The film is based on hundreds of hours of Fakhir’s own footage in the field, and more recent footage of his attempts to demine the liberated city of Mosul after over 80% of its buildings had been booby-trapped by ISIS. The viewers join “Crazy Fakhir” in condensed, fast-paced real time, every moment of it rapt with suspense.
