Gerhard Richter Painting

Germany 2011, 97 min, English and German, Hebrew subtitles

Gerhard Richter is considered one of the world’s most significant living painters; Corinna Belz’s film provides a rare and intimate look into his work process. Belz entered the artist’s studio in the summer of 2009, when he worked on a series of large abstract paintings. Richter admits that the camera’s presence bothers him, but his crucial problem is the composition of the painting. Belz’s camera captures a unique duality in his approach: amazing moments when his sure hand creates a colorful wonder on canvas, and moments when Richter retreats into destructive self criticism. Belz observes Richter’s mesmerizing act of painting, and confronts him with landmark moments in his 5 decade long career.
