PORTRAIT OF WALLY

Austria / United States 2012, 90 min, English, Hebrew subtitles

Egon Schiele’s portrait of his mistress, Walburga (“Wally”) Neuzil, is one of the treasures of the Leopold Museum in Vienna. Yet it was held for an unprecedented 13 years by U.S. authorities, following a legal battle between the Austrian museum and a Jewish family, from whom the Nazis confiscated the painting in 1939. Reconstructing the portrait’s history – from a love story to its theft from Lea Bondi, a Jewish art collector forced to flee to England, and its seizure in the U.S. following its exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1997. Mesmerizing images of Schiele’s paintings accompany interviews, as representatives from both sides of the scandal explain how they finally reached an agreement.
