The Education of Auma Obama

Germany 2011, 79 min, English and German, Hebrew & English subtitles

On November 4, 2008 Auma Obama’s family gathered around the television, tensely anticipating the election of Barack Obama, her half-brother, as the first African-American U.S. President in history. Branwen Okpako’s film follows Auma closely, revealing the fascinating history of the family and of Africa. Auma grew up in Kenya in the shadow of her strict and distant father – a political activist who fought for the independence of his country. She studied dance, linguistics and film in Germany, and created projects dealing with African identity from a feminist, post-colonial perspective.
