First Position

United States 2011, 94 min, Hebrew, English, French and Spanish, Hebrew subtitles

The world of ballet is competitive and exclusive. Out of multitudes who devote their time to rigorous training, only few achieve the desired yet short-lived career. “First Position” follows a year in the lives of six young dancers (ages 9-19) who come to participate in one of the most prestigious competitions in the field. Of 5,000 competitors, few will win scholarships or job offers enabling them to realize their dreams. The feverish preparations do not allow the children leisure time; huge sacrifices are made by the parents too in order to support the children, and sometimes to push them to success. The exhausting journey reveals the personal story leading each of the protagonists to devote his or her life to dance.
