Tonia and Her Children

Poland 2011, 57 min, Polish, Hebrew & English subtitles

Tonia Lechtman, an idealistic Jewish Communist that was compelled to flee Poland during Second World War, returned to her homeland only to be accused of espionage by the new Communist regime. She never recovered from the five years she spent in jail. Her children, Werka and Marcel, were born during the war and grew up in an orphanage. Years after her death they meet to decipher Tonia’s mysterious character and the way their difficult childhood experiences shaped their lives. The film’s director, a childhood friend, asks them to look at archive materials, read their mother’s letters, and try to bridge between their divergent memories. The intimate meeting evokes questions about the gap between the personal and the ideological, past memories and present lives.
