The Loving Story

United States 2011, 77 min, English, Hebrew subtitles

In 1958, twenty states in the U.S. still had laws against interracial marriage. In that year, Mildred and Richard Loving were arrested for making their relationship official in Virginia, as she was part black and part Native American, he was white. The judge ruled that they would have to leave the state (or face arrest), but the Lovings decided to fight for their rights. Aided by two young brilliant lawyers they changed the course of history: after a nine year battle, the Supreme Court ruled that the laws against interracial marriage were unconstitutional. Beyond its significance to civil rights history, the pure and heartrending love story of this couple is reflected in the extensive archive materials.
