Carte Blanche

Germany / Switzerland 2011, 91 min, English, French and Spanish, Hebrew & English subtitles

The International Criminal Court in Hague was established to try those responsible for crimes against humanity and war crimes. Heidi Specogna’s film exposes the complex process of preparing the indictments, focusing on preparations for the trial of Jean-Pierre Bemba, accused of war crimes in the Central African Republic. Court investigators travel to the continent to gather reliable testimony from victims, and the scientist responsible for collecting evidence uses advanced technology, in an attempt to find signs of events that took place more than eight years ago. After the field work comes the turn of the judges, who must contend with tortuous arguments that threaten to undermine the efforts of the prosecution.
