Ivan and Ivana

Serbia / United States 2011, 80 min, English and Serbo-Croatian, Hebrew & English subtitles

Jeff Silva’s film begins in Kosovo in 1999, as he meets a young couple who dreams of escaping the horrors of war and leading “a normal life.” Seven years later, Ivan and Ivana seem to have succeeded to escape. They live in a private house in California and own a convertible. Actually, their situation is tenuous: their investments in the American real estate market have led to heavy debts, and the economic crisis threatens to turn their American dream into a nightmare. Silva decides to follow his immigrant friends as they cling to normalcy throughout emotional, political and financial breakdowns for five years. Their trust enables Silva to offer an intimate portrait of lives that meet harsh social circumstances in every direction.
