MIRAGE

United Kingdom 2011, 42 min, English, Bengali and Swahili, Hebrew & English subtitles

Dubai’s rapid growth from the desert has become a contested symbol of global capitalism. For the international business community the city represents unprecedented success, whereas for laborers arriving from third world countries it is a prison of broken dreams. With a meticulous yet contemplative gaze, director Srđan Keča's camera follows the contradictory perspectives that constitute the city: empty urban spaces against crowded labor camps, extravagant resorts of investors faced with the chilling loneliness of workers. Apart from exposing the human (or inhuman) reality of Dubai, Mirage conducts a visual research of an ambitious urban project that dissolves into the surrounding wild dunes.
