STEP UP TO THE PLATE

France 2011, 90 min, French, English subtitles

French chef Michel Bras, whose restaurant boasts three stars (the highest rank) in the ultimate restaurant guide Michelin, decides to hand the throne over to his son Sebastian who has worked with him for 15 years. The film follows the family's rite of transition and reveals the art of their cuisine. The story unfolds in four parts that follow the seasons, amid the magnificent landscapes of the Aubrac region. Director Paul Lacoste does not intervene; he observes patiently the family dynamics, the meticulous design of dishes and the inevitable passage of time and generations. The father and son's journey to the restaurant’s new branch in Japan adds a multicultural dimension to the inter-generational encounter.
