The Reluctant Revolutionary

Ireland / United Kingdom 2012, 70 min, Arabic and English, Hebrew & English subtitles

Director Sean McAllister arrived in Yemen as a tourist, but left with intense footage from the heart of events leading to the overthrow of Ali Abdallah Saleh. While on a jeep tour, McAllister befriends Kais, an intelligent and contemplative tour guide from the capital city Sana'a, skeptical and disparaging of the mass protests. When the political situation heats up, McAllister sticks close to Kais for an unmediated look at the tent protest in “Change Square”. As the violence between protesters and authorities rises, Kais’s attitude towards the revolution undergoes a change. After foreign journalists have been forced out of the country, McAllister remains; a witness to the slaughter that has made his protagonist a reluctant revolutionary.
