Danube Hospital

Austria 2012, 75 min, German, Hebrew & English subtitles

With meticulous cinematography of the various departments, surgical procedures, workshops, equipment rooms and human circumstances, celebrated director Nikolaus Geyrhalter offers a fascinating personal visual investigation of one of the largest and most advanced hospitals in the world. Geyrhalter avoids the gripping emergency room scenes that usually capture the audience's attention in movies and on TV. Neither does he spend time on the lives and personalities of the staff. This film focuses on the system at large. Its goal is to examine how a complex and critical institution like a hospital functions today. At the same time, Geyrhalter knows how to turn an investigation into a mesmerizing cinematic experience. His ostensibly indifferent perspective enables him to transform the hospital into a visual mosaic in which the human body controls and is controlled by the monitors, machines and miniature cameras that surround it from every direction.
