The Search for Emak Bakia

Spain 2012, 83 min, Basque, French, Italian and Spanish, Hebrew & English subtitles

A lyrical journey in the footsteps of Man Ray's famous but mysterious film "Emak Bakia" ("Leave Me Alone" in Basque). Director Oskar Alegria heads to the Basque region, ostensibly to discover exactly where the film was made. As we soon learn, however, this "goal" is little more than a means to a much larger end. Alegria collects clues from people and buildings. He consults with experts and passersby alike, and even tries to recreate a few of the magnificent shots in Man Ray's work. As the mystery increases, the film becomes a tribute to Man Ray's experimental spirit and his use of chance in cinema. Eighty years after the original was made, Alegria's film combines a historical foray into Man Ray's unique artistry with an experimental tribute that uses the original as a point of departure for a new cinematic journey.
