South Africa 2013, 83 min, English, Afrikaans, French, Portuguese and Spanish, Hebrew & English subtitles
What happened behind the scenes that led to the release of Nelson Mandela and the fall of the apartheid regime? This film tells the remarkable story of a mysterious businessman known only as “Monsieur Jacques”, who was active in the secret negotiations to free the famous freedom fighter and bring down South Africa’s racist government by peaceful means. How did Jean-Yves Ollivier convince statesmen and diplomats, generals, spies and freedom fighters from across the region to cross borders, redeploy troops, overcome crises of trust and eventually launch the long, complicated process which led to the first democratic elections in a land that symbolized racism and discrimination? How did he bring about the elections of that country’s first black president?
