More than two-thirds of Christmas Island is a nature reserve. Located in the Indian Ocean, it is home to a dense jungle filled with rare plants—and forty million red crabs that lay their eggs on the beach. At the heart of the jungle is a high-security detention center holding hundreds of refugees who came to the Island seeking asylum in Australia.
Therapist Poh Lin talks to the inmates and hears about their experiences before and after coming to the island. They have no idea when they will be released or where they will be shipped off to, and while the Islanders hold rituals to appease restless ghosts, the inmates’ condition continues to deteriorate. As she explores the untamed, enchanted landscape with her little girls, Lin is plagued by many moral questions.
