Hilma af Klint never met the entry requirements of the early 20th-century art scene—she was not a man and did not frequent the bohemian cafés of Paris or Vienna. But in her Stockholm studio, she created 193 breathtaking abstract paintings long before Kandinsky (the supposed pioneer of abstract art) ever dreamed of it.
Af Klint did not live to get the recognition she deserved as the first abstract artist. She claimed to have created her huge, enchanting and colorful paintings with the guidance of extra-dimensional voices speaking to her from the “psychograph”. In 1901, she felt that the world was not ready for her, but when the Guggenheim Museum in New York displayed her work last year, the experts had no choice but to revise the history of modern art.
