Seen from afar, the Alps may look like a picturesque fantasy, but those who have seen the massive mountain range up close know just how powerful and menacing it can be. As settlements and resorts take up more and more of the Alpine slopes, the need for safety measures against nature becomes increasingly greater.
Researchers, engineers, laborers, and disaster relief agencies are developing sophisticated defense measures against mudslides, avalanches, rockslides, cracks that open up into gaping chasms, and other dangers lurking in the mountains.
In a remarkable display of camerawork, the film shows the dangers—both obvious and subtle—from unexpected angles, as it follows the effort to deploy a complex, giant safety net against them, without spoiling the view.
