Macedonia 2019, 85 min, Turkish, Hebrew & English subtitles
Hatidze Muratova is probably the last female beekeeper in Europe who still extracts honey from natural colonies. The hives are hidden away in mountaintop crevices. In order to reach them she must climb narrow paths and shove her bare hands into the buzzing swarms. The camera follows her for three years: in the remote ramshackle house she shares with her mother, dog, and cat; on her arduous journeys to the bees through the beautiful landscapes of Macedonia; through her enchanting honey-extraction rituals; and on her trips to the market, where she sells it.
This grueling but heartwarming routine is interrupted unexpectedly by a family of nomads. Their plan to set up an artificial bee colony threatens Muratova’s livelihood, but their company, especially that of their children, eases her loneliness. The film won the Best International Film Award at Docaviv 2019 and the Grand Prize and the Special Award for Cinematography at Sundance.
