The boy should have been married by now, but something’s not right with him. The filmmaker’s grandmother is convinced that a demonic possession is to blame for her grandchild’s odd ways. In this deeply vulnerable and razor-sharp doc, the young Chinese-born filmmaker, who has left home but remains deeply tied to their homeland and family, films their relatives’ efforts to “save” them from their queerness by spiritual means. Through prayers, incantations, and mystical rites delivered in a neat package of meticulous cinematography and editing, the filmmaker captures their complex relationship with their matriarchal family, creating a poignantly accurate account tinged with irony and brimming with compassion.
