In one of his interviews, Elisha, son of Holocaust survivor, author, and Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel, said of his father: “It was like being with someone who had a spiritual radio; he was picking up signals that only he could feel and hear. There were ghosts for him there. He brought them back to life. Even when he didn’t talk about them, the weight of their presence was palpable.” This pointed, morbid, and heroic description of a man who tirelessly dedicated his voice and writing to ensure that the world does not forget and prevent any denial of the Holocaust’s horrors, also captures the vivid portrait before us: a comprehensive biography that covers Wiesel’s private and public life, his legacy, and his enduring influence, told through old and new interviews with his family, an impressive collection of archival materials, and minimalist yet highly effective hand-painted animation sequences.
