This sweeping monograph of François Truffaut, “The Man Who Loved Cinema,” unfolds across several distinct yet interwoven threads: his rough upbringing, which informed The 400 Blows; his complicated relationship with his parents, revealed through poignant letters voiced by actor-director Louis Garrel; his passion for writing, critique, and actresses like Jeanne Moreau and Catherine Deneuve; and, naturally, his lifelong obsession with cinema, sparked by his attempt to start a film club at 14. This same obsession later propelled him to become a key architect of European modernism and one of the most influential and multifaceted auteurs in cinema history. This poetic and inspiring doc uses film clips and evocative imagery to bring the great auteur’s “life’s screenplay” to life, rekindling the viewers’ curiosity to revisit Antoine Doinel, the French New Wave, Paris, and Truffaut himself.
The screenings of this film have been made possible through the generous support of Institut Français d’Israël.
