From her cramped room, where portraits of Jesus and Stalin share wall space with photographs of her younger days, Mzia watches the security cameras, monitoring the comings and goings in a vast apartment complex in Tbilisi, Georgia. For the last 18 years, she has been in charge of the elevator—rusty, creaking, and frequently out of order—a strange, singular vestige of the communist era. The neglected brutalist building may feel alienating to its residents and visitors, but Mzia sees them all, offering an affable “good morning,” asking after their well-being, and overseeing the flow of information between floors and neighbors. This tragicomic character study is centered on an elevator and its operator, two relics of a disappearing world.
