Slovakia / Czech Republic 2024, 108 min, Slovak, Hebrew & English subtitles

Whether naive or idealistic, Zuzana Čaputová was undeniably a rarity in Slovak politics, perhaps even on the world stage. She won the people’s trust and the presidential election by declaring that the political arena should be governed by sensibility, reason, and, above all, human decency. Except that slander, condemnations, fake news, and a lot of heartbreak quickly marred the clean slate with which she began her five-year tenure. This remarkably comprehensive and intimate human portrait documents her years in office, including the candid, eye-level interactions with her colleagues, the unmediated conversations with members of the public, and the daily confrontations in which she had to defend not only her political stances but also her identity as a woman and a mother. Through her personal story, a sobering picture of the state of democracy in Europe emerges.
