What begins as a garden-variety music doc chronicling the lead-up to the reunion tour of Pavement, an alternative rock band whose seemingly effortless cool belied musical ingenuity and creative depth, swiftly morphs into something far more unique. This witty and engaging jigsaw-like hybrid film blends together three tributes to the band that defined the 90s’ indie spirit: a pop-up museum exhibit celebrating the band, a musical consisting of their songs, and a (fictional) Hollywood biopic starring Joe Keery and Jason Schwartzman. Navigating this maze of productions and punctuating it with archival footage is director Alex Ross Perry, who crafts this ultimate fan saga with the drive of a true cinephile and a near-irresistible enthusiasm. In his own words: “My goal was to not direct scenes or shots but to create storytelling that unfolds in public yet is all done for a film.” There has never been a band like Pavement, and I hope there has never been a film like Pavements.”

Alex Ross Perry was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and worked at Kim’s Video in Manhattan. He is the director of the films The Color Wheel, Listen Up Philip, Queen of Earth, Golden Exits, Her Smell, and more.
