This is a Rome cinema seldom shows—dark, filthy, cruel. Damian arrived there from Poland years ago, dreaming of making music, only to spiral into the precarious existence of a homeless addict, a drunkard, both aggressor and victim. The rough-sleeper community is a kind of family, fickle and unstable like their lives, where moments of laughter and tension-release punctuate the misery, and conversations about everything and nothing reveal dreams that will, in all likelihood, remain unfulfilled. Effectively crafted to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, this gripping and illuminating observational film bends the rules again and again, relentlessly surprising and challenging us, much like its subjects.
The screenings of this film have been made possible through the generous support of the Italian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv.
