Early in the film, fashion designer Thom Browne earns what could be considered his industry’s Olympic gold: Anna Wintour emphatically declares him “one of a kind.” This endorsement, echoed by figures like Zendaya, Michelle Obama, and others, would not have been possible without the garment that became his signature mark: the tailored gray suit. Browne took what was considered the most classic, conservative menswear staple and expanded it into a wealth of variations that push the boundaries of formalwear and verge on the wildly eccentric. His subversion of American stereotypes is a prominent thread throughout his work, particularly in the pieces that launched him to superstardom: his spectacular creations for the Met Gala red carpet. This is the story of a creative, influential, and trendsetting man who continues challenging traditional notions of how men and women are “supposed” to dress.
