When Greg LeMond, the first American to win the Tour de France, lined up for the race in 1989, he had 37 shotgun pellets in his body, two of them just millimeters from his heart. He had been shot by his brother-in-law while out hunting and nearly died, but with the help of his devoted family, he returned to cycling after two years of recovery. His biggest competitor was Laurent Fignon, a French cyclist at the top of his game with two Tour de France victories under his belt. LeMond, who described cycling as “the pure place,” the one place where he could forget the sexual abuse he had suffered in childhood, did not dare to dream of victory but did not give up either—not until the final seconds. Featuring stunning cycling footage, the film reveals the dramas, betrayals, manipulations, and intrigue behind the scenes of this elegant sport.
