When, as a child, Gregor Weber saw a painting by Vermeer for the first time, he nearly fainted. Now, as the curator of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, he is finally realizing his long-held ambition: to hold the biggest-ever exhibition of Vermeer’s works. Less than forty pieces have been unequivocally attributed to the 17th-century painter, whose personal life remains shrouded in mystery. Weber and his team of equally excited experts try to obtain the paintings from various collections around the world. As millions of tourists are about to flock to the exhibition, curators, restorers, historians, and collectors are still embroiled in heated debates about which of the lesser-known paintings is authentic and which is worthy of being displayed next to “Girl with a Pearl Earring” or “The Milkmaid”.
