“In Medellín, you can’t see the horizon,” says director Theo Montoya, referring to more than the mountains surrounding Columbia’s second-largest city. Many of Montoya’s friends in the city died young: some were murdered, others took their own lives or succumbed to an overdose, and those who survived are living under the ever-present threat of violence. Such is the life of the city’s queer scene. Montoya’s film features interview footage from the auditions for a post-apocalyptic film he had hoped to make, about a world where young people are persecuted and hunted for daring to fall in love with zombies. The film’s lovable cast members, led by Camilo Najar (known online as Anhel69), talk candidly about escaping the harsh realities of their childhood. With his spellbinding aesthetic, Montoya brings to life the fantasies his friends had never dared to dream up.
